Move Over: Stop Ignoring Indiana’s Left-Lane Law

two-lane interstate both lanes heading in the same direction where two cars are side by side as one attempts to overtake the other

Driving the Indiana interstates and highways often, I see this issue all the time, and frankly, I’m tired of it. The situation with drivers hogging the left lane when they’re clearly not passing or moving slower than the flow of traffic isn’t just annoying; it’s a blatant disregard for Indiana’s driving laws and is a risk to everyone’s safety.

Let’s get this straight for those who haven’t caught on yet: Indiana’s left-lane law isn’t a suggestion. Staying in the left lane when you’re not supposed to be there is a violation of state law. It’s as if you’re saying a big ‘I don’t care’ to the basic rules of road safety and to every other driver trying to get by. This law, in effect since 2015, aims to prevent the slowdowns and hazards created by left-lane hogs. And yet, some seem to miss the memo.

For those who think the left lane is their personal lane, regardless of speed, it’s time for a wake-up call. You’re not the traffic police; deciding how fast others should go is not your job. What you’re actually doing is creating a bottleneck and a safety risk, forcing others to undertake risky maneuvers to get past you.

Indiana State Troopers aren’t out there handing out tickets for fun, either. They’re enforcing a law designed to keep traffic moving safely and smoothly. If you’re caught, you’re not just facing fines; you’re risking a mark on your driving record because you chose to ignore a simple, sensible law.

So here’s the bottom line: If you’re in the left lane and not passing, you’re wrong. Move over. It’s not just courteous; it’s the law. Ignoring this puts everyone at risk and blatantly disregards the rules of the road. Do your part, follow the law, and help ensure a safer driving environment for everyone.
