On this battlefield that is life, you’ve got those days when you’re cruising—windows down, music up, feeling like the master of your domain. That’s your windshield moment. Everything’s clicking, you’re in the zone, and obstacles? They’re just bugs on your windshield. You wipe them away without a second thought. It’s exhilarating, right? But here’s the kicker: life’s not all open roads and sunny skies. No, sir.

Stepping into the Light: Sharing My Journey of Addiction and Recovery
Over at Resilience Unleashed Empowerment Services, I laid out my battle with addiction. Not for accolades or sympathy but for a purpose far greater: transparency. Why? Because in the realm of recovery, authenticity isn’t just a word; it’s the foundation upon which trust is built. If you’re in your own struggle, know this—you aren’t navigating this terrain alone. I’ve been there and made it through to the other side. Not unscathed, but undoubtedly stronger.

Yesterday, I stepped into the familiar ground of the police department for a training day—a place where I also serve, albeit part-time. The air was thick with the anticipation of physical and mental drills, but it wasn’t long before the tone shifted. The guys started to reminisce about my previous life’s exploits, tales of my time spent in the trenches at another employer. As we went through the motions, they brought up the sound of my voice over the radio, cutting through the chaos of my adventures. They remembered instances where I was outnumbered but not outmatched, fighting to stay alive and coming out on top. They talked about my arrests, the dangers I faced, and the victories I secured. Yes, those were my adventures, thrilling at the time, but now, they’re chapters of a past I’ve pushed to the back of my mind to make room for the life I lead today.

His battlefield is the recovery bed; his enemies are the physical and psychological challenges that follow such a monumental procedure.

Note: I wrote this yesterday but did not have a chance to post it.
Waking up today, I felt the onset of what seemed like a cold. Maybe it’s the real deal, or perhaps it’s just my body reacting to the dramatic weather shifts we’ve been experiencing. But here’s the reality—it doesn’t matter how I feel. I got up. I powered through my morning routine and geared up for my workout and a run. Why? Because this is where discipline comes into play.

A new chapter began in September, not by choice but by necessity. The full-time job I took wasn’t a mission I sought after, nor was it a passion pursued. It was a decision made when options were scarce, a path taken because no other paths were in sight.
